A new lawn can be established with hydroseeding or sod, but the two methods look different at installation. Hydroseeding applies a seed mixture to prepared ground; sod provides an established grass layer. Both need suitable preparation and care after installation. Understanding Hydroseeding in the Capital Region
Redwood Landscape offers both methods for commercial and residential properties in Albany and the Capital Region. Hydroseeding distributes grass seed, mulch, water and other materials over prepared soil. It does not use water pressure to force individual seeds into the ground.
When comparing options, explain how soon the area needs to be used and what appearance is expected at project handoff. Sod's immediate grass coverage does not mean its roots have already established in the underlying soil. Hydroseeded grass must germinate and develop before regular use.
Lawn Establishment: Preparing Soil for Successful Growth
Have the site reviewed before committing to an application date. Existing grade, drainage, soil condition and access can affect the work required. Discuss construction or equipment traffic that could disturb the prepared area.
Ask for a clear list of preparation tasks and identify which are included in the proposal. Grass selection and timing should respond to the property's conditions and intended use, rather than a generic list of species or a promised growth deadline.
Commercial and Residential Hydroseeding: Project Planning
- Confirm the area to be installed and the chosen establishment method.
- Identify a water source and the person responsible for aftercare.
- Request instructions for watering, foot traffic and initial mowing.
- Clarify how concerns will be reported and what follow-up is included.
Keep dated photographs as the lawn develops and communicate changes in site conditions. Lawn installation is a defined project; ongoing residential mowing, treatments or other services should not be assumed to be included. Confirm any additional work directly with the provider.
